speech and drama Regulations

1. ADJUDICATOR’S REQUIREMENTS:

A copy of OWN CHOICE items must be provided to the Secretary/Convener/Front of House prior to the session, clearly marked with SECTION number and COMPETITOR number.

2. COMPETITORS:

a) Competitors must mark their names off at the front desk prior to the appropriate session.

b) All sections are OWN CHOICE.

c) All pieces, except Prose Reading and Sight Reading, are to be performed from memory.

d) A copy of memorised items, clearly marked with SECTION number and COMPETITOR number, must be provided to the Secretary/Convenor prior to the session.

e) Novice is for competitors who have never received a 1^st, 2^nd or 3^rd place in ANY Speech/Drama section at ANY eisteddfod/festival to date.

f) Competitors entered in ‘Novice Humorous’ are NOT eligible for ‘Humorous’.

g) Presentations are NOT to be costumed nor acted, except for DRAMA sections.

h) J.J.Richards Memorial Scholarship – see Section 1600.

4. SIGHT READING

Practice times: 8-12 years = 30 seconds 13-15 years = 1 minute

Music Regulations

1. ADJUDICATOR’S REQUIREMENTS

a) A copy of music (for instrumentalists) / music and words (for vocalists), with the exemption of sections MS 6, MS 7, M20 V3, M20 V13, M20 V14 and M20 IG7 must be provided to the Secretary/Convener prior to the session, clearly marked with SECTION number and COMPETITOR number.

b) Competitors are not permitted to speak with the adjudicator until after the completion of all his/her festival performances.

c) The adjudicator provides all sight reading pieces.

2. CHOIRS

a) Please report to the Choir Marshall on arrival at the Civic Centre - before entering the Auditorium. Please conform to NUMBERS as specified.

b) No section will be delayed because of the late arrival of ANY choir. Choirs arriving late may perform ‘out of the section’ for adjudicator’s comments ONLY.

c) Choir numbers MUST be adhered to (with a leeway of 3 persons either side). NB. This leeway does NOT apply to Small Vocal Ensembles/Groups.

d) Choir commencement times: Secondary Schools Day – Friday 22nd June 2012 - 9.30am start

Primary Schools Day – Monday 25^th June 2012 - 9.30am start

Infant Schools Day + Small Schools Day – Thursday 28^th June 2012 - 9.30am start

3. BANDS

All members of all bands must be within the age group prescribed.

4. VOCAL

a) Please use accompaniment as specified. Piano only backing CDs are available from Heather Martin for a small fee. Phone 02 6672 2008.

b) Microphone may only be used in Rock/Pop or Jazz groups sections and self accompanied sections.

5. IDENTICAL PERFORMERS

Identical groups may appear once in the same section except if they are all performing on different instruments and/or with different partners.

6. ACCOMPANIMENT

A section without specification means any accompaniment is acceptable. The use of an accompaniment is optional but the performance must conform to the style of the piece.

7. ACCOMPANISTS

Available accompanist – Mrs Beth Brooks of Murwillumbah. All arrangements re rehearsals, fees and music must be made at least 2 weeks prior to the Festival. Fee to be paid directly to the accompanist. A late notification fee of $20.00 will apply, in addition to accompaniment fee. Phone 02 6672 3294

8. CD PLAYING

The playing of CDs in the Music/Vocal sections is permitted provided the CD complies with the appropriate requirements of the section. If you intend using a copied CD, please have a back-up disc available. You must provide your OWN operator. (A CD player will be provided. A tape player will NOT be provided.)

9. PIANO CHAMPIONSHIPS (MCH1, MCH2)

a) Competitors MUST play in at least 1 other corresponding piano section within their age group

b) Competitors must not repeat a piece they have already played in another section.

10. INSTRUMENTAL CHAMPIONSHIP (MCH3)

a) Competitors MUST play in at least 1 other corresponding instrumental section within their age group.

b) A competitor must not repeat a piece already played in another section.

C) Competitors may enter a section more than once ONLY if performing on a different instrument.

11. DEFINITIONS

ANY OTHER INSTRUMENT = not strings, not woodwind, not brass

Strings = violin, viola, ‘cello, double bass

Woodwind = flute, oboe, clarinet (any type), bassoon, piccolo, cor anglais, double bassoon, saxophone (any type)

Brass = trumpet, trombone, French horn, tuba, cornet or any of the related instruments

1 Piece = 1 whole piece which has only 1 movement or 1 movement of a multi-movement work

Traditional = music which has been passed orally from generation to generation

12. DUETS

Make sure BOTH names are entered on the Entry Form.

13. ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT

Groups using electrical equipment MUST use only electrically approved and tagged cords.

14. TROPHIES

Trophies MUST be returned to Annette Simpson (6672 2745) by Entry Closing Date (Friday 9^th March 2012).

15. VENUE

The Murwillumbah Civic Centre has NO facilities for rehearsal during competition.

16. PERFORMANCE ORDER

It is expected that all performers perform in the order set in the programme. Special requirements are to be made to the Convenor with Entry Forms. Performers who perform out of order will receive comments only.

c) 30 music stands and a basic drum kit will be supplied for the Primary Schools’ Day.

d) Time of tuning is to be kept to a minimum.

e) Choir numbers MUST be adhered to, with a leeway of 3 persons either side. This leeway does NOT apply to Small Vocal Ensembles/Groups.

f) The use of an accompaniment is optional but the performance must conform to the style of the piece and the directions of the section.

g) Please supply a copy of the music to the Front Desk prior to Session. All sections are OWN SELECTION.

h) Choir stands will be on the auditorium floor.

i) Only teachers wearing school identification will be admitted free of charge to the Festival but only when accompanying their school on school

This biennial award of $2000 has been donated by the family of the late Alton Budd, in recognition of his

contribution to the Festival as an early competitor, committee member and lifetime supporter.

CONDITIONS

1. Age limit – 18 to 35 years, as at the date of closing of entries.

2. Open to any singer who has lived in Australia for at least 5 years. Proof of age and residency may be required.

3. Winner of this competition is to have the highest aggregate mark for the songs that are sung.

4. No previous winner is eligible.

Dance Regulations

1. Late entries will NOT be accepted.

2. It is the responsibility of the Teacher/Parent in charge to see Groups/Troupes are side stage and ready for performance.

3. Each Dance Group/Troupe will be allocated an assembly area backstage and there will be Dance Marshals to direct you.

4. NO Principal/Teacher nor Parent of ANY Dance Studio/Academy, is to PERFORM in these Dance Sections. Student teachers are exempt.

Teachers who teach and/or rehearse any Eisteddfod groups are NOT considered ‘Student Teachers’ and therefore are NOT permitted to

dance in Group/Solo sections.

5. Competitors must NOT repeat a dance performed in any section in any other section, EXCEPT in RESTRICTED Sections and J.J. RICHARDS

MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP.

6. J.J.RICHARDS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: An award of $2000 and a Perpetual Trophy donated by Idwall Richards and family, in memory

J.J.Richards, a prominent Tweed Citizen. See DOP SCH1.

7. Time limits must strictly adhered to. Solos: 3 Minutes Duo & Trios: 4 Minutes Solo Song & Dance: 4 Minutes

Solo Song & Tap: 4 Minutes Groups: 5 Minutes

8. CDs and PLAYER: a) A suitable CD player and an operator WILL be provided. One item per CD, a good quality CD must be provided, in a

protective case.

b) ALL CDs are to be clearly marked with section number, competitor number, starting position, ie, on or off stage, and if they have a tag.

c) Please have a BACK UP CD available. Do NOT use labels on the CDs as these may cause CD failure.

d) Please use an appropriate CD pen to mark your CD. Biros and other pens can damage your data.

e) The COMMITTEE’S OPERATOR will NOT be held responsible for poor quality recordings. A tape player will NOT be provided.

9. CHAMPIONSHIPS: Competitors MUST dance in the equivalent SOLO sections to be eligible for Championships. Improvisations do NOT qualify

for Championships.

10. IMPROVISATION: Improvisation music is provided by the Adjudicator.

Competitors allowed 30 seconds break to improvise after hearing the music through once. Plain coloured leotards and tights to be worn as per

examination conditions, DEFINITELY NO TRIM. All dancers to appear on stage prior to commencement of section.

11. RESTRICTED DANCE: These sections are for competitors who have NOT won a 1^st prize in the appropriate Dance Section of ANY festival or

eisteddfod up to the time of Entry closure. Competitors MAY repeat the same dance in the corresponding unrestricted section.

12. DUOS/TRIOS: a) NO competitor may appear MORE than twice in the same DUO/TRIO section.

b) NO DUO/TRIO consisting of IDENTICAL DANCERS may appear more than ONCE in the same DUO/TRIO section.

c) NO TEACHER or PARENT is permitted to perform with the DUOs/TRIOs.

13. GROUP DAY Competitors are NOT permitted to use the Auditorium Foyer toilets for dressing and make up. These are for audience only. All

competitors should arrive with hair and make up done as there are limited facilities.

14. FLASHLIGHT cameras are NOT to be used during ANY performances of the festival. VIDEO cameras are NOT to be used during the Dance

Sections.

15. TROPHIES must be returned to Annette Simpson, by 9am Sat 30^th June, 2012. (16 Myrtle St, Murwillumbah – 02 6672 2745 or at the

Auditorium.)

16. Song and Dance Groups and Solos – NO VOCAL BACKING permitted throughout the entire performance.

17. Teachers NB: Unacceptable and disruptive behaviour in dressing areas or stage areas will NOT be accepted or tolerated.

18. Dressing Rooms: Please make sure each dressing area is left in a clean and tidy manner. ALL rubbish to be placed in bins provided.

19. Lost Property: Any lost property will be kept for 2 weeks and then given to charity.

20. Maximum age for competitors is 20 years.

21. There will be NO ADDED entries or changing of entries to the Dance Programme, unless it an error by the committee. Please make sure you

check with your teacher regarding the appropriate section to enter. There will be NO exceptions to this rule.
